Two of the best racing simulations available for the PC are LFS and rFactor
Live For Speed (LFS)
Live for Speed, commonly known as LFS is a very very realistic racing simulation "game". Some would argue it's more of a simulator than a game, as it is so realistic. It's big attraction is for online multiplayer racing. You simply join the server of your choice and away you go. Some driving skill is usually helpful :)
There are no extra tracks to download, extra cars to download, or anything like that. The "game" has a fixed set of cars and a fixed set of tracks. Out of the box (or, rather, download) the graphics are nothing spectacular, but there are lots of tweaks and updates available to improve it.
rFactor
rFactor is a racing simulation "game" with a huge amount of add-on's freely available to download. Everything from new cars, new tracks & complete new series' are available. The advantage is that you will certainly find a car or a track that you like. The disadvantage of this huge range of downloadable content is that it is often difficult to find an online server with a combo (combination of car and track) that you actually have already installed. Some people simply get frustrated by this, but it is certainly worth a look.
At the time of writing, my favourite 'MOD' is called Historix. It is basically the Historic GT cars, and both the visuals and sounds are superb.
